Implementing PWS-specific Behavioural Management strategies as early as possible is crucial. These include structure & daily routines, anticipating & preparing for any changes in the schedule, implementing the Principles of Food Security and engaging in collaborative problem solving.
Both Dietary Management & Exercise are key components of the comprehensive care plan for individuals with PWS. Dietary management involves the use of controlled diets to manage the excessive hunger and potential for obesity that is common in individuals with PWS. Exercise is also important in managing weight and promoting overall health.
Providing academic & life skills education to PWS patients as if they were in a school setting is also necessary. It would however be modified to accommodate the unique needs & challenges, such as attention deficits & behavioural issues.
Providing support and resources to individuals and families who may struggle with the financial burden associated with managing PWS. It could include free diagnosis, access to medications or assistance in regards to education/employment.
Involves the use of various treatments and therapies to manage the symptoms and associated health issues of PWS. This can include hormone replacement therapy, growth hormone therapy and medications to manage behavioural issues or other health conditions.
It is defined as “a group of people with common experiences and concerns who provide emotional and moral support for one another.” Support groups fulfil many functions such as educating patients/family, sharing the illness experience, providing strength to its members, raising public awareness and fundraising.
